Frequently asked

A few common questions.

Which kit should I choose?

If your interest is exclusively in matcha — for example, a matcha bar, a coffee chain adding ceremonial matcha, or a matcha-focused retailer — the Tier 1 Tasting Flight covers the complete 2026 lineup at the most appropriate cost. If your business is broader Japanese tea — a tea house, a Japanese restaurant, an importer of fine teas — the Tier 2 Discovery Set adds gyokuro and a pair of single-cultivar fukamushi sencha (one of them Triple Platinum-awarded) for USD 50 more. Most multi-category buyers find the Tier 2 set is the better starting point.

What payment methods do you accept?

After we confirm your sample request, we send a secure payment link via Stripe by email. Stripe accepts all major international credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, JCB) and Apple Pay. The price covers the kit and worldwide shipping — no additional fees at checkout. Bank wire transfer is available on request for buyers who prefer it.

Why is there a sample fee?

Each gram of our 2026 first-flush matcha — and our gyokuro and award-winning sencha — represents a year of careful work by our partner producers. The fee covers material cost, packaging, and international shipping, and ensures samples reach buyers who are seriously evaluating a wholesale relationship. The fee is fully credited toward your first 50 kg+ order placed within 90 days.

What is fukamushi-style sencha?

Fukamushi means “deep-steamed.” Where conventional sencha is steamed for 20–40 seconds, fukamushi sencha is steamed for 60–120 seconds. The longer steam softens the leaf cell structure, producing finer particles, a deeper jade liquor, intensified umami, and a much shorter brewing time (30–60 seconds at 70°C). This is the modern Shizuoka standard and reflects a deliberate stylistic choice — not low quality. Both senchas in our Discovery Set are fukamushi-style.

How would you describe the senchas in the Discovery Set?

Asatsuyu brews to a matcha-like jade liquor, with a broad-bean aroma and dense, rounded umami. We often find it more mellow at the cup than matcha itself — the same cultivation depth, but in sencha format. Ikeda-en Tsuyuhikari, our Triple Platinum-awarded sencha, has a delicate cherry-leaf aroma with soft, gentle umami — a more refined and aromatic expression. The two together cover both ends of the fukamushi sencha spectrum.

Can I also try your Bodai-Sancha?

Yes, on request. Our lacto-fermented Bodai-Sancha is supplied separately as a B2B raw material rather than a finished sample — the leaf is voluminous and is best evaluated in a dedicated shipment. Please indicate your interest in the message field below, and we will include a Bodai-Sancha sample with your kit at no extra cost. For broader background on the leaf, see our bodhi page.

Can I order custom quantities or just one selection?

The two kits above are our standard offerings. For specific custom requests — for instance, a single producer in larger quantity for cupping, or a non-standard combination — please write to us directly via the inquiry form.

How are the samples shipped to preserve freshness?

Each matcha and sencha sample is sealed in nitrogen-flushed aluminum packaging immediately after grinding or finishing. Gyokuro receives equivalent treatment. The complete kit ships in an insulated outer box. Once received, store sealed samples in a cool place and consume within four weeks of opening.

What countries do you ship to?

We currently ship samples to North America, Europe, Australia, and most of Asia via EMS or DHL. For destinations not on our standard list, please indicate in your request and we will confirm feasibility.

How long does shipping take?

Typically 5–10 business days depending on destination. North America and Australia: 5–7 days. Europe: 7–10 days. Asia: 3–5 days. We provide tracking with every shipment.

What if I need EU pesticide compliance?

Our Okabe Yabukita selection (included in both kits) is EU-compliant. Other selections meet US standards. We can include this information with your kit, and a Certificate of Analysis is available on request.
